HOW TO INCREASE CLASS PARTICIPATION

For a teacher, the most important task is to engage students in the classroom. To increase class participation, teachers use different techniques like teaming up, making small groups, praising, rewarding, motivating, removing obstacles and barriers, etc. Classroom participation is a feature of many course designs. It can result in intuitive comments and interesting contacts being made by students, and can foster a high level of energy and interest in the classroom learning environment. Some of the techniques are discussed below:

1. Call - Call on specific students by name.
2. Ask - What motivates them.
3. Team up – Do team work and let them answer together.
4. Create - Let them create something with their hands as you teach.
5. Small groups - Let them flourish in small groups.
6. Move - Work while moving in the class.
7. Heads – up - Let them know the question up front.
8. Express - Let them express themselves in their own way.
9. Take note - Take note who is participating when.
10. Mix - Mix up students you call on.
11. Praise - Praise them before s/he speaks up.
12. Music - Play music in the background.
13. Comfort - Take them aside, let them know you care and it’s safe to share.
14. Assist - Help them to participate.
15. Remove - Remove obstacles to participation.
16. Reward - Reward participation, intrinsically and extrinsically.
17. Zip it - Teachers, let them speak.
18. Get to know - Get to know the students.
19. Give - Give them a reason to have a voice.
20. Send - Send them home with a mission.
21. Develop - Develop their self-worth.
22. Place - Strategically place them in a friendly zone.
23. Control - Give them the control of activity.
24. Move - Re-arrange the seats.
